Please fill out the Cultivar Registration form (one for each cultivar to be registered) and return it to the Registrar – via either e-mail or to the mailing address. Please provide as much information as possible; if you do not know a particular piece of information, just leave it blank. All the blanks do not have to be filled in for the cultivar to be registered, but obviously the more information you can provide, the better.
Prior to submitting a registration request, please read the Guidelines for Naming and Registering Cultivars.
Once a cultivar is accepted for registration, a description is written based on the information provided on the registration form, and that description will appear, along with others registered in that year, in an article in the Journal of the Magnolia Society. The Journal is published twice a year, and the registration article usually appears once each year. Increasingly, digital photos have been submitted as part of the registration process. When possible, please submit digital photos with a resolution of 300dpi or greater. Images taken at a higher resolution will help provide better images for printing. If you send color slides of the plant along with the registration form, the photos can be published along with the article. Photographic slides will be scanned for publication and than returned to the owner. Both digital images and traditional photographic slides are strongly encouraged as they provide even more documentation of the cultivar.
The Cultivar Registration Form is in a PDF format - Adobe Acrobat Reader is required.
Examples of outstanding documentation of more recently approved cultivars. Below are two examples of completed cultivar registration forms. In both instances detailed information is listed. The more information you can provide the better. While not all the information may be readily available, you should strive for the most detailed accounting of your proposed cultivar submission. With these examples as guidelines, be prepared to take the time to observe, study, and record as much detail as possible.
Magnolia ‘Anilou’
Magnolia ‘Cathyrn’
Notes on plant availability or access to a living plant. While not required by the ICRA, cultivar originators should be cognizant of the fact that your plant should be assessed for ease of propagation. If the plant is being considered or promoted for wider use, efforts should be made to propagate and distribute the plant for further evaluation and to ascertain its ease of growing for eventual nursery production. Singular plants in cultivation are vulnerable to being permanently lost in cultivation. Plants found in a garden or private plant collection may permanently be lost through change of property ownership or natural disasters. It is in your best interest with plants of exceptional merit to propagate and distribute plants to protect them from permanent loss.
